The 1PR-2S Springfield is a 2-vertical head machine. It has been
modified to perform only an internal boring function. Each head works
independently of the other with its own operator interface pendant and
 its own in-process gage. This allows two parts to be machined either
simultaneously or sequentially. Vertical feed on each head comprises
multiple hydraulic cylinders and an AC motor driven ballscrew. The
Hydraulic cylinders extend and retract the grind wheel into and out of
 the part, and provide speed control for dressing, oscillating, and
rapid motions. The vertical ballscrew is used to jog the grind wheel
up and down short distances in order to center wheel oscillation on
parts with different setup heights.
Horizontal feed of each head comprises an hydraulic cylinder and an AC
 servo motor driven ballscrew. The hydraulic cylinder was originally
used to "index" the head left and right to facilitate dressing the
bottom surface of the grind wheel for facing of parts. This function
is no longer used; however, the hydraulic cylinder is functional and
could be used to obtain part-loading clearance if care is taken to
insure there is no interference between the head and the in-process
gage fixture.

1.1	Electrical System

Machine control is implemented with an Allen Bradley SLC 5/03
controller in a 13-slot rack installed in the main electrical
enclosure.  Grinding is accomplished with a left and a right-hand
servo motor controlled by two Stepper Control modules installed in the
 SLC rack. The size of the bore; rough, medium, and fine feed rates;
sparkout dwell; and speed change transition positions are
programmable. Cycle variables for up to 80 parts can be stored and
edited in the controller memory.
Chuck speeds and orientations are controlled with Allen Bradley
Power-Flex 700 drives. Drive speeds are commanded over left and
right-hand remote I/O links. Motor positions are monitored by high
speed counter modules installed in the rack with orientation
accomplished by a software algorithm in the controller.
Discrete machine I/O is provided by one 16-point AC input card, one
16-point DC input card, one 16-point RELAY output card, and one
16-point DC output card in the rack. In addition, left and right-hand
groups of Flex I/O modules controlled over the remote I/O links are
installed on the machine base. Two Allen Bradley Panel View Plus 1000
touch-screen displays provide operator interface.
